Are Entrepreneurs Born or Not - 2062 Words

Research in the field of entrepreneurship has over the years increased, yet questions and consensus over issues in the field of entrepreneurship have yet to be answered or agreed upon. (Lazenby et al., pg. 2) Issues include the definition of entrepreneurship and whether or not entrepreneurs are born or trained. In this essay the arguments involved in defining entrepreneurs will not be analysed, but specific attention will be given to the argument on whether or not entrepreneurs are born or trained. According to Reynolds et al. (2000) entrepreneurs are people who have both the will (in other words, desire or motivation) and the skill (the ability) to project their ideas or schemes into the future, and, by backing their judgement with†¦show more content†¦These include: 1. good listening skills, 2. ability to play passionate advocate, 3. broad knowledge and education, 4. sound judgement, 5. ability to separate the important things from the unimportant, 6. ability to set priorities and focus on goals, 7. pleasant scepticism. (Anonymous, 2003, pg. 2) Herb stated that vision and the ability to inspirationally communicate it others are the most important abilities required by successful entrepreneurs. Therefore according to Herb, entrepreneurs are born and trained, and require a mix of these two to become successful. The natural born characteristics of an entrepreneur are the building blocks or foundations on which entrepreneurs can build upon. (Anonymous, 2003, pg. 3-4) Entrepreneurs are born by circumstance Ââ€" where there is hunger, where there is despair, where there is desire. (Chye, pg. 1) According to Brown (1999) some people are born entrepreneurs, with or without education they will succeed, whereas no amount of education can provide business success for someone that does not have the ‘entrepreneurial spirit . (Brown, 1999, pg. 3) Skills and characteristics that entrepreneurs require include: critical thinking, reliance on experience, venture feasibility analysis, venture strategy and evaluation skills, networking, deal-making and harvesting skills. Merriam Webster defines perspective as â€Å"the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance. Dr. Zoltan Takacs, a herpetologist (one that studies reptiles and amphibians) and toxinologist (one that studies toxins) has gone to 147 countries to study snakes and the toxins in their venom. In a National Geographic video, he is asked if he is a risk taker and he replied† he likes his life and don’t want to die but his work includes a calculated risk. But having the driving force, the knowledge, and the tools can keep the risk minimal†. Many don’t know that Takacs has been bitten seven times but is also allergic to the snake venom and the antivenin itself. It is all about perspective to how you view life. Markus Zusak, author of the Book Thief and Erik Larson, author of The Devil in the White City use perspective to show how people can personify an identity, treatment of others and never change regardless of time. In light of using per spective to identify, we see people in the Book Thief and The Devil in the White City that have a positive and negative attitude towards life because of events. In chapter the grave digger’s handbook Death narrates â€Å"The book thief and her brother were traveling down toward Munich, where they would be given over to foster parents. We now know, of course the boy didn’t make it†. Leadership Insights about Leadership

Question: Examine yourself as a leader. Share some insights about leadership that you have identified about yourself. Answer: Leadership This paper examines and reflects my insights on leadership. The reflection is based on the way I view myself as a leader. Over the last few weeks I put emphasis on several aspects such as purpose of leadership and traits possessed by a successful leader. The data collected from peer interactions and secondary sources over time provided insights about my leadership. When I see someone as a leader, I wish to be like him or her. Through my experience, leadership is a continuous process for me. The leaders face different situations in life and their act accordingly. The leaders possess several character traits that are essential for effective management. I have developed traits such as creating vision, problem solving skills, interactive skills, conflict management, and many more (Kouzes Posner, 2013). However, I need to improve my team building skills by assigning appropriate work to the members. I have learned many things about leadership in my lectures and personal experience. I have developed propensity to take control of situations. I prefer to take an organized approach to solve problems. I prefer to interact with others and collaborate using different perspectives (Johansen, 2012). I possess assertiveness that allows me to be positive and direct with the individuals. Every organization needs to be interconnected so that they can anticipate problems, frame plans and execute them as and when required. My peers told me that I am very comfortable to talk with and they can discuss their problems with me. I am keen to solve issues after critically analysing the situation (Yukl, 2013). I consider multiple perspectives before arriving at a decision. Additionally, I am detail oriented and can be critical of others work. I have set high standards for myself as well as team members. I prefer working beyond my comfort zone. I take criticism constructively although I need to put efforts to make rectifications based on others judgments (Kouzes Posner, 2013). I aspire to strive, continually improve and never quit. The fundamentals as a leader are in place. My focus shall be on tuning and enhancing my leadership skills. I shall develop my critically analysing skills. I welcome feedback and learning experiences from everyone. I have a desire to maintain equilibrium and consistency as a leader (Kouzes Posner, 2013). Going through the leadership theories and models, I aspire to become a transformative leader. I intend to increase self-awareness and attempt to shape them. I shall empower others by encouragement, cultivating vision and providing right tools. My willingness to adapt, grow and improve shall help me in leading others (Giuliani Kurson, 2012). Conclusively, leadership strengths and weaknesses are evident after conducting self-evaluation. The reflection in the above paper shall help me in growing personally as well as professionally.
